![]() ![]() Both main characters unravel the true past of their dead wife.Themes the film and game share are that of child abuse, fact vs fiction, and acceptance. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character encounters characters that are two different people but claim to be the same person just like Mary and Maria in SH2, he travels through a grimy, damp, labyrinthine prison that is similar to the hospital and labyrinth in SH2, and he just so happens to be an unreliable narrator just like James in the video game. Martin Scorsese’s period piece about a detective searching for a deranged murderous escapee on an island has Silent Hill written all over it. The somber look of the blue color palette the DP utilizes throughout the film, gloomy weather, and a slow burn horror/thriller story technique makes this film the perfect companion to your Silent Hill experience. Despite this film being rated PG-13, don’t let that fool you into thinking this is for teenagers (as my fiance can well attest). *As of this writing the film is streaming free on IMDbTV*Īctually, my fiance and I just watched the film a couple days ago because the game put me in the mood for this film.īoth stories involve a mystery, murder, child abuse, and super creepy locations. The Ring is the American version of the original Japanese Ringu. It just so happens my first recommendation is another Japanese creation that debuted 13 months after Silent Hill 2 hit store shelves. That being said, if you want the official Silent Hill experience without dedicating a lot of time with a game, then the films are an option albeit ones missing some incredible locales, story, and mood. The first film is troubling due to its third act, not just crumbling, but promoting a bizarre anti-Christian worldview. The first film, perfectly embodies the video game and partially derives its story from the first Silent Hill game the second movie, which partially derives its story from Silent Hill 3, is a weaker film storywise but the mythos still provides enjoyment for Silent Hill fans. Silent Hill’s Influence on CinemaĪ quick note, there are two theatrically released Silent Hill films both of which I have seen. What I can recommend are some movies and TV shows that perfectly evoke either the atmosphere or story of Silent Hill 2. ![]() Personally, I rated Silent Hill 2 a 9/10. It is rated M for Mature for a reason and most gamers, if the controls don’t put ’em out, then the intense nature of the unnerving environments likely will. I felt as if a weight had been lifted off my chest.Ĭan I recommend this experience to everyone? No, I can’t. Once I finished the game, I was left with feelings of profound sorrow yet, depending on which ending you get (there are six) you may feel even worse or receive closure. The game is a short 8ish hours (it took me 8 hours and 23 minutes) and once I got the awful, clunky controls down, I found myself sucked into the macabre, deranged world in order to further unravel the mystery. Mind you, a few hours into this game I realized I’m in a for dark, heavy ride therefore, I had every intention of cutting the tension by playing the PS2 classic, Destroy All Humans, in between SH2 sessions…except that didn’t happen. I thought I would take advantage of playing older titles I have missed out on, so starting with Silent Hill felt like a good choice. Having open access to the second and third games (widely considered the best entries in the franchise) on my PlayStation 4 system is a great opportunity considering picking up the physical collection used is quite expensive and the ports are inferior versions since Konami lost the original source code. I had heard a lot about the franchise and always had an interest in playing it, but the future of the franchise has fallen into limbo and the only way to get your hands on a Silent Hill game is either to track down an expensive, used copy, bootleg it, or gratefully, PlayStation has released the first installment digitally (only for PS3) or here’s the great part: if you’re a PlayStation Now member (which I am) then you have ongoing access to the PS3 edition of Silent Hill HD Collection. My Silent Hill ExperienceĪbout a year ago (to my memory), Allen told me he had just finished playing Silent Hill 2 for the PC. In 2012, Konami released a high definition remaster of Silent Hill 2 and 3, titled Silent Hill HD Collection, for the Playstation 3 (PS3) and Xbox 360 game consoles. ![]() The game released to critical acclaim, praising the graphics, haunting build up of terror, and tackling heavy issues such as assisted suicide and child abuse. Despite carrying the number two in the title, this is not a direct sequel to the original game, but rather, the game takes place in the same setting and universe. Silent Hill 2 (SH2) is published by Konami, a Japanese made survival-horror game released on the PlayStation 2 (PS2) and Xbox in late 2001. ![]()
